2010 -2011 3rd Quarter Report
1. General Work
> With the launching of the new website and the ability to continuously run news items and
stories, the Chamber now features business and company stories from the media and the
City, and, in addition, has begun to write news releases and articles with an in -house
professional volunteer. The Chamber is also partnering with San Leandro Patch to both
reproduce and co- publish business - related stories.
> Prepared and delivered 8 email broadcast industry alerts on the trends and changes in U.S.
industrial production, including returning some production from Asia.
> Prepared and delivered 6 email broadcasts offering technical assistance and programs, with
a continuing focus on accessing capital, the most difficult issue facing particularly small
companies needing credit lines or advances to grow capacity.
> Expanded Chamber's contact directory with 9 new entries to broaden outreach to the
industrial community to engage them in both Chamber and City programs and services.
2. Industrial & Technology Program
> This quarter, work has begun with the Program Chair to redefine the strategy and work
program for what has been traditionally called the Industrial Roundtable, moving away a
luncheon format to a special event format, with industrial /technology topics that dovetail
with the Chamber's San Leandro by Design initiative, the Sustainable Circles initiative as
well as the City's Industrial Competitiveness Program. This review also reflects assessing
the broker statement quoted in the Chamber's 2 quarter report: "In year end review,
veteran broker considers San Leandro industrial inventory is `beginning to show its age',
and that a thorough assessment of its strengths and weaknesses should be undertaken ". The
Chamber has had very preliminary discussions with the City's Business Development staff,
as well as discussions with business leaders who will help craft this redefined strategy and
work program. In the fourth quarter, the Chamber will work with these business leaders
and City staff to fully develop the program for 2011-2012.
3. Industrial Councils
> Continued individual company visits as effective means of outreach.
. > Through 3rd quarter, staff continued walking parts of the five areas and visited 6
companies, personally introducing the program to those companies, and inviting them to
participate in future meetings.
> Follow up contact was made via phone calls and/or emails.
> Continued commercial /industrial brokers contacts and review their quarterly market reports
to assess their evaluation of San Leandro's competitive position in the current market:
theme of the responses continue to be very consistent with past contacts: vacancy rates
continue to be "at or below the average" to "a little higher than average" for competing
cities in the 880 corridor ". Again, continued concern for 2010-2011 is the lack of capital
San Leandro Chamber of Commerce — 10 -1 1 City Contract — Industrial Program — 3rd Quarter Report Page 2
