N II -V &#7 W li W.W f a %161 MEMORANDUM Date: June 2, 2011 To: Business and Housing Development Committee From: Steve Hollister, City Manager Via: Luke Sims, Community Development Director By: Cynthia Battenberg, Business Development Manager Subject: REDEVELOPMENT AGENCY SUPPORT FOR SAN LEANDRO CHAMBER OF COMMERCE PROPOSED BUSINESS ASSISTANCE SERVICES FOR FISCAL YEAR 2011 -12 The City and/or Redevelopment Agency (Agency) have supported the San Leandro Chamber of Commerce (Chamber) in their business assistance efforts as far back as records are available. In FY 2010 -11, up to $43,600 in Agency financial assistance was approved. For the upcoming fiscal year, staff is recommending up to $41,800 in support to the Chamber for implementing assistance programs that serve the business community. BACKGROUND AND ANALYSIS The relationship between a City and a Chamber of Commerce is important for both organizations. The City benefits from the Chamber representing businesses, as well as from the Chamber programs which provide services and information to businesses and opportunities for businesses to connect. The Chamber benefits from the financial resources which enables them to offer programs and services to the business community. Attachment A includes research results of sample Chamber of Commerce programs for your information. The San Leandro Chamber of Commerce's proposed programs are in line with the types of programs other Chambers offer. In FY 2010 -11, the Agency approved up to $43,600 in support to the San Leandro Chamber for their partnership. Chamber accomplishments include three San Leandro by Design Events, the launch of a new and improved website, industrial outreach including recruitment of businesses for Sustainability Circles and support of the Careers in Manufacturing partnership, and the Shop San Leandro First Community Fair. Agency staff recommends continued support of the Chamber's business assistance efforts in FY 2011 -12. In total, the Agency is proposing up to $41,800 in support for the following programs. • Industrial Competitiveness Grant Program marketing $5,000 • Careers in Industrial Technology Partnership $500 • Implementation of Branding & Marketing Strategy $10,000 • San Leandro by Design (3 events) $2,500 /event • Shop San Leandro First Community Fair $1,300 • Chamber Community Portal Website $6,000 • Business Success Series (2 series of four classes) $5,000 /series • Chamber Membership, 24 lunches & Public Service Announcements $1,500
