Attachment 1
Auletta, Jennifer
Subject: FW: Support for polystyrene ban
From: Carrie Spector
Sent: Thursday, May 12, 20112:56 PM
To: Ornelas, Kathy; Cassidy, Stephen; Reed, Ursula; Souza, Diana; Starosciak, Joyce; Cutter, Pauline; Gregory, Michael;
Prola, Jim
Subject: Support for polystyrene ban
Dear Mayor Cassidy and City Councilmembers,
As a resident of District 2 in San Leandro, I was happy to hear about a proposed ban on the use of polystyrene containers
for takeout food and beverages in the city, and I urge you to support this effort.
I am often disappointed and ashamed to see polystyrene containers in use at our local restaurants. Many of our
neighboring cities have already banned the use of these containers, including Hayward, Oakland, Fremont, and
Alameda. When San Leandro began its curbside green waste pickup program, I was so proud to tell friends in other cities
how advanced San Leandro was with this effort. But the sight of polystyrene containers, given what we know about their
environmental and health implications, makes me feel embarrassed to live in a community so far behind its neighbors on
this issue. Berkeley implemented its ban on polystyrene more than 20 years ago!
I appreciate your consideration of this ban, and hope you'll do right by San Leandro and the environment by supporting
it.
Best regards,
Carrie Spector
