Attachment 1
SIERRA
Northern Alameda County Group
( Alameda - Albany - Berkeley - Emeryville - Oakland- Piedmont - San Leandro)
CLU
2530 San Pablo Avenue, Suite I, Berkeley, CA 94702
510- 848 -0800 (voice) • 510- 848 -3383 (fax)
FOVND IB92
July 28, 2011
Dear Members of the San Leandro Rules Committee:
delivered via email
The Sierra Club supports a styrofoam ban as has been previously adopted in Oakland, Berkeley and
other localities as a way of reducing unwanted trash and pollution from reaching San Francisco Bay
and the Pacific Ocean. Polystyrene, better known by the brand name Styrofoam, is not readily
recyclable, especially when it has food on it. It just ends up as litter or goes in the landfill. In the
worst case, particularly in coastal communities like San Leandro, Styrofoam ends up polluting the San
Francisco Bay and then the Pacific Ocean in the form of small particles (see "Great Pacific Garbage
Patch. ")
The following Alameda County jurisdictions have adopted polystyrene ordinances where the use of
Styrofoam food packaging is banned.
• Alameda
• Albany
• Berkeley
• Emeryville
• Fremont
• Oakland
We think it is a natural and logical step for San Leandro to adopt a similar ordinance. We urge you
to support the polystyrene ban.
Thank you for your time and consideration. If you have any questions or wish to discuss this further,
please contact me at (510) 914 -8376 or via email at ssyed @sonic.net.
Sincerely,
Sarah Syed,
Chair, Executive Committee
Sierra Club, Northern Alameda County Group
