December 15, 2011
Honorable Planning Commissioners
My Name is Dan Dillman; I am a San Leandro Homeowner and a major stakeholder in
our wonderful city of infinite possibilities, especially in the realm of Entertainment as I
am the owner operator of The Historic BAL Theatre.
It was my desire to be here tonight in person to share with you my thoughts and input on
this very important matter of eliminating entertainment & recreation in any area of our
city. It is truly concerning to me, and thousands of other San Leandrians, that the city is
even considering eliminating entertainment & recreation from any of the said zones.
You honorable commissioners are the ones that "we the people" count on to be the scales
of balance on such matters, to protect and represent the desires and will of the people of
this city. I pray that you will not allow this to happen, I pray that you are the ones who
push back on such a backwards way of thinking.
These changes would not effect those who would prey on our vices by running sex shops,
strip clubs, and bars because they, and other types of these businesses, would still be
allowed in these said zones.
It is not legitimate business owners desire to put the health and safety of the community
at risk, and because recreation & entertainment are conditionally permitted, the city still
has control in choosing which types of these businesses would move into town.
I am however in favor of adding assembly or "church" uses to the proposed zones.
Though the issues of adding churches to some zones and eliminating recreation &
entertainment from other zones, should be separate and voted on separately by the
Planning Commission and then the City Council.
I hope you will consider all of the consequences of your actions this evening. I look
forward to living, working, and raising my kids in a city that appreciates recreation &
entertainment, and supports their expansion.
Thank you.
Dan Dillman
The Historic BAL Theatre
