San Leandro's Manufacturing Legacy
Industrial activity in San Leandro goes back to the 1800s with the manufacturing the Best Steam Traction
Engine, a 9 -ton behemoth that was built for world -wide use in farming, forestry and earth- moving. Best
Tractor, ultimately became the Caterpillar Tractor Company. San Leandro also had a role in the nascent
computing world. The Friden Calculating Company, manufactured the world's first °Supermatic" fully
automatic machine in 1939. Now the Friden site is the home of OSIsoft.
That San Leandro was home to a host of industries was no accident. Critical investments in infrastructure
positioned San Leandro to attract postwar capital flows. San Leandro, between 1948 and 1957 alone,
gained 15,000 industrial jobs and over $130 million in capital investments.
Times have changed; traditional manufacturing businesses have departed California for cheaper land,
labor and energy, leaving the City's industrial area with properties ripe for repositioning. Although, the
nature of industrial production is transitioning, the City's commitment to industrial activity has remained
strong. Unlike many neighboring communities, San Leandro has resisted the temptation to convert
industrial areas to residential uses. About 25% of the City's land area is zoned industrial . With a strategic
location near an international airport and one of the largest ports on the west coast, San Leandro is poised
to capitalize on 21st century manufacturing and technology growth.
To realize these opportunities, San Leandro must once again make a an investment in infrastructure —this
time to modernize the availability of broadband connectivity.
)
a 4r
ill
• % i
U_ •  \  / 4 Businesses in Buffer
•a 1 G7 5 !,+ Employees
 •. ) / . 1 4- 30
0 31-50
ag 51-100
\
101 -200
 _ ■ o D \  Q  ;
49 201-395
IN y City Fiber Buffer (200m)
City Fiber
r
CITY OF SAN LEANDRO
0 025 0s , MR- Proposed Fiber System with Existing Businesses
o- a,9re
