Palo Alto
and Santa Clara are two Bay Area cities that
have publicly owned fiber networks.

Lit San Leandro was the brainchild of OSIsoft’s
Kennedy, who paid for the installation of the
fiber in city-owned underground conduit with the
goal of spurring economic growth in the city’s
faded industrial neighborhoods. San Leandro
also won a $2.1 million federal grant to add 7½
additional miles of new conduit, which will bring
the fiber network to over 18 miles.

“This kind of network enables software
developers to build new things, which is the Bay
Area at its best,” Kennedy said.
