City of San Leandro <br />Meeting Date: February 19, 2013 <br />Resolution - Council <br />Agenda Section:File Number:13-062 CONSENT CALENDAR <br />Agenda Number:8.C. <br />TO:City Council <br />FROM:Chris Zapata <br />City Manager <br />BY:City Council <br />FINANCE REVIEW:Not Applicable <br />TITLE:ADOPT: Resolution Supporting Assembly Bill 59, The School Funding <br />Protection Act of 2013 (supports proposed legislation clarifying that existing <br />law authorizes school districts to assess parcel taxes in accordance with <br />uniform property classifications) <br />WHEREAS, the City of San Leandro is committed to and supports providing a quality <br />education to children and families in San Leandro and surrounding cities; and <br />WHEREAS, the State of California has drastically reduced funding for education over the <br />past several years in an effort to balance its budget ; and <br />WHEREAS, the California public educational system has suffered from inadequate , <br />insufficient funding due to these budget cuts ; and <br />WHEREAS, Assembly Member Rob Bonta, representing the 18 th Assembly District, <br />introduced Assembly Bill (AB) 59 to clarify existing revenue options for local school districts so <br />they can continue providing educational opportunities in the face of ongoing state budget <br />difficulties; and <br />WHEREAS, AB 59 clarifies existing law by stating that school districts are allowed to <br />assess parcel taxes in accordance with rational classifications among taxpayers or types of <br />property within a district, as long as the taxes are applied uniformly within those <br />classifications; and <br />WHEREAS, AB 59 helps ensure that school districts have every option available to them <br />to educate the children of California. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, the City Council of the City of San Leandro does RESOLVE to <br />support The School Funding Protection Act of 2013. <br />Page 1 City of San Leandro Printed on 2/12/2013
