18 City of San Leandro | Economic Development Initiatives and Work Plan | May 2013 <br /> <br />creates a great place for the community <br />to gather, but also shows potential <br />retailers that the San Leandro desires <br />and supports specialty retailers. <br />Accomplishments To-Date: The City has <br />produced five years of successful <br />markets and, on April 10, 2013, celebrated the opening of the current season. <br /> <br />Parking Strategy – With the opening of the new Downtown San Leandro Parking Garage in <br />late 2012, the City is now looking to develop a coordinated approach to parking regulations and <br />enforcement throughout Downtown San Leandro. Although San Leandro generally has an <br />adequate supply of affordable parking for employees and shoppers, improvements are needed <br />to ensure that the most convenient parking spaces are available for shoppers, making visits to <br />Downtown San Leandro easy and convenient. Planned developments around the Downtown <br />San Leandro BART station will also need to be considered as the City develops an updated <br />approach to parking. <br />Accomplishments To-Date: <br />• In November 2012, the new 384-space downtown parking <br />garage opened. The LEED certified garage provides <br />convenient parking for employees and customers and will <br />allow for great density development downtown. <br />• In early 2013, the City secured funding for an assessment of <br />parking in Downtown San Leandro. A detailed survey is <br />scheduled to begin soon. The results of the survey will be <br />used to refine parking policies. <br /> <br />TOD Strategy Implementation – In 2007, the City completed an award winning Transit- <br />Oriented Development (TOD) Strategy for Downtown San Leandro. The Strategy provided a <br />vision and environmental clearance for higher-density, transit-friendly development throughout <br />the downtown area. The Village Marketplace, the tech campus, and The Cornerstone housing <br />project all fit within this vision. To date, the economic recession has slowed implementation of <br />the Strategy, but improving real estate markets are likely to bring increased activity in the near <br />future.
