Council Member Perry said she has been invited to be part of <br /> Telecommunications 101 through the Bay Area Economic Forum, which will <br /> help Bay Area governments make informed decisions about the deployment <br /> • of advanced communications infrastructure in our Information Age. <br /> B. Council Member Polvorosa noted there has been an upsurge in graffiti , <br /> particularly tags by "GWD. " He said there is quite a bit of graffiti <br /> on utility boxes in the downtown area and on Washington Avenue. <br /> Council Member Polvorosa requested that the meeting be closed in memory <br /> of Jim Cole, the former City Fire. Chief. <br /> C. Council Member Kerr also noted that graffiti appears to be increasing <br /> rapidly. <br /> Council Member Kerr said Melvin Jackson, the convicted rapist, will <br /> eventually be released again, and the City should make sure the Police <br /> Department is well -prepared to let the community know. <br /> Council Member Kerr said he attended the Retirement Dinner for Al <br /> Gallardo, Alameda County Transportation Authority, and presented the <br /> City' s Commendation. <br /> Council Member Kerr said the Washington Manor Junior League is planning <br /> a major tournament in August and would like to use the City's <br /> ballfield. He said the tournament will include the entire Western <br /> Region, including the Western States, Hawaii , and Guam, and will bring <br /> a lot of people into town. <br /> Council Member Kerr said he and the Economic Development Coordinator <br /> met with the Greenhouse Marketplace Business Association, which is <br /> becoming active and wants to do a lot of advertising and increase <br /> business. He noted activities they have already undertaken, <br /> particularly increased security during the holiday season. <br /> D. Council Member Loeffler spoke regarding a recent meeting with Jack <br /> Goodrich, the new President of the Chamber of Commerce, and said there <br /> is a good tone and a feeling of cooperation. <br /> Council Member Loeffler discussed the Summary of the East Bay <br /> Conversion and Reinvestment Commission and said Alameda is trying to <br /> keep its piers open. He also discussed the Oak Knoll Reuse Plan and <br /> said he hopes to hear more from the Economic Development Coordinator on <br /> the transition of various bases. <br /> Council Member Loeffler spoke regarding the recent accident involving <br /> a 14 year-old en route to school . He said there is increasing danger <br /> to pedestrians in San Leandro, and something must be done to get the <br /> message out to slow down for pedestrians. <br /> Council Member Loeffler also requested that the meeting be adjourned in <br /> memory of Jim Cole. He said he was impressed with Mr. Cole, both as a <br /> Fire Chief and as a human being. <br />
