Council Member Perry noted the recent death of former Council Member
Joe Coppa and expressed her condolences to the family.
Council Member Perry said she has never received a letter or phone call
from Mr. Johnson related to Bayfair. She discussed her involvement and
the long-term involvement of the City Council in activities in Bayfair
and discussed the many issues and actions that have taken place,
including Rules of Conduct, the Bayfair Safety Review Committee, and
the concept of City Hall in the Mall . She said problems exist but not
any more than at other malls, and it is important that this be kept in
perspective. She said the prospective owners of Bayfair will be at an
upcoming Work Session. She described programs currently at the mall ,
including activities to tie into schools, the senior escort program,
etc.
B. Council Member Polvorosa said the City has worked diligently with
Bayfair Mall , and it is a sad statement that it's a few people's
perspective that there is crime or unsavory people at the mall . He
said there are unsavory characters in all malls, and Bayfair is no
different than any others. He said it is up to the people who live in
the community to help make it safe. If we do not take care of our own
mall , we lose not only revenue but something that belongs to all of us.
C. Council Member Kerr said the Mayor did an excellent job regarding
what's been happening at Bayfair Mall , and he appreciates Council
Member Perry's report.
Council Member Kerr said he recently attended a dinner for the
Philippine Naga Society for USA for the City's Sister City. He said
the Mayor of that City has been in San Leandro twice. He requested
information on the City' s other Sister Cities - one in Brazil and Ponta
del Gada in Portugal - and that San Leandro keep in contact with them.
Council Member Kerr noted that the Battle of Iwo Jima took place 50
years ago and was the bloodiest battle since the Civil War. He asked
that the meeting be closed in remembrance of those who were lost at Iwo
Jima.
D. Council Member Loeffler noted the Subcommittee on Disaster Preparedness
approved a brochure on preparedness, and San Leandro is in better shape
to help the community survive in a disaster. He thanked the San
Leandro Times for their assistance in getting the information out.
Council Member Loeffler said he observed a San Diego Council meeting
which was broadcast on Cable TV and watched the impact on the community
when people have access. He requested information on Cable in other
communities, including when the Cable TV broadcast was adopted, how
much it cost, and how it was funded.
