Minutes - San Leandro City Council Meeting - May 1, 1995 Page - 17 - <br /> 9. CITY COUNCIL COMMENTS <br /> A. Council Member Myers spoke regarding the annual Adult Volunteer <br /> Recognition Luncheon. He said 380 volunteers gave over 40,000 hours of <br /> service to the City, which is one of the things that sets San Leandro <br /> apart. <br /> Council Member Myers commended the Loyalty Day Program at the Veterans' <br /> Memorial , conducted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars, District 14, and <br /> Auxiliary Post 819. <br /> Council Member Myers volunteered to sponsor a Trivia Bee team; <br /> interested Council Members agreed to get in touch with Council Member <br /> Gal van. <br /> B. Council Member Loeffler said he attended the April 25th Estudillo <br /> Homeowners' Association meeting; the turnout was good and staff's <br /> presentation on low-income housing was very well organized. <br /> Council Member Loeffler said he attended the Durant Homeowners' <br /> Association meeting, which was held jointly with Oakland. He said <br /> Engineering staff from both cities are working with the residents to <br /> deal with traffic issues, and he was very impressed with some of the <br /> proposed solutions, which included the installation of speed humps. <br /> Council Member Loeffler commended staff for the excellent Economic <br /> Development Breakfast. <br /> Council Member Loeffler said approximately 30 students attended the <br /> Youth Summit at San Leandro High School and discussed topics such as <br /> racism and affirmative action with a great degree of' sophistication. <br /> Council Member Loeffler requested that staff explore the possibility of <br /> a "Pioneer Day" in San Leandro celebrating and honoring citizens who <br /> have been here for a long time. <br /> Council Member Loeffler said May 12 will be the new Amtrak dedication <br /> in Jack London Square. <br /> C. Council Member Kerr said he has been told speed humps work very well in <br /> Portland and function as a "sleeping policeman. " <br /> Council Member Kerr congratulated Lavern Anderson for a well -done <br /> Loyalty Day program. <br /> D. Council Member Perry said she would create a name for the City <br /> Council 's Trivia Bee team. <br /> Council Member Perry said she attended San Leandro High School ' s Open <br /> House; there was a wonderful display of art work, which will be on <br /> display at Bayfair Mall starting on Friday. She suggested that student <br /> art be displayed at City Hall in the Mall . <br />
