CITY COUNCIL COMMENTS
A. Council Member Corbett asked how the hiring of students impacts the
Business License Fee of those businesses.
Vice Mayor Faria said there is concern that having to pay additional
Business License Fees for youths will affect the youth employment
programs. He said there are over 600 kids involved in the Regional
Occupation Training Program, and most of them are working in San
Leandro. He said the City does not wish to discourage youth
employment. Staff was requested to look into how this could be
handled.
B. Council Member Corbett said she and Council Member Perry participated
in the Martin Luther King, Jr. , Day activities on Monday. She said
there was supposed to be an outdoor march but, due to weather, the
event was held at the Teamsters Hall . She said it was an inspiring
day, with people coming together and sharing their memories of Dr.
King. She said the San Leandro banner was carried, and she thanked
Dennis Smith for his participation and said it was a very nice event.
C. Council Member Kerr said he has a large fence on Lewelling Boulevard
which is often graffitied. He said recently the City of San Leandro
graffiti -removal employee came by and helped him clean up the graffiti
and did a very good job.
D. Council Member Kerr said the newspapers misreported the Dunsmuir
project. He said one newspaper said the San Leandro City Council had
approved the project. He said the San Leandro City Council did not
approve the project. The project was totally in Oakland. He said
Oakland denied the project. He said it is important for the public to
know that, if Oakland had not denied the project and the San Leandro
City Council had not approved the MOU, San Leandro would have ended up
paying for all improvements. He said he thinks the City Council did
the right thing, and he is writing a Letter to the Editor explaining
his views.
E. Council Member Polvorosa noted graffiti is appearing on the soundwalls
on I-880 almost as soon as it goes up; in fact, while the scaffolding
is still in place.
