Minutes - San Leandro City Council Meeting - May 24, 1993 Page - 2 - <br /> PUBLIC COMMENTS/CITY COUNCIL COMMENTS (continued) <br /> Mayor Karp said he had sent a sample ordinance to the City Council some <br /> time ago and asked if they were interested in revising the City's <br /> ordinance. The City Council said what is being done now seems to work. <br /> F. Council Member Polvorosa noted the passing of Herman "Tweety" <br /> Alexander. He said Mr. Alexander grew up and spent his whole life in <br /> San Leandro. He said he and Mr. Alexander had gone through school <br /> together and were great friends. He said Mr. Alexander was the owner <br /> of Santos Linguisa. He said Mr. Alexander was a great friend and will <br /> be a great loss to the community. Council Member Perry expressed her <br /> condolences to the family. <br /> G. Council Member Perry noted the Youth Safety Committee will have a booth <br /> at the Cherry Festival focusing on graffiti - what the City does, its <br /> policy, tagging, etc. She said people interested in volunteering <br /> should contact Vice Mayor Polvorosa. <br /> H. Council Member Perry said the matter of Drug Free Zones was discussed <br /> with the San Leandro Unified School District this week and will be <br /> before both the San Leandro and San Lorenzo School Boards by June 1st <br /> and to the City Council on June 7th. <br /> I. Council Member Perry commended the organizers of the Home Tour. She <br /> also noted that the colors she was wearing at tonight's meeting were <br /> reflective of Memorial Day and said there would be a memorial service <br /> at the Chapel of the Chimes. <br /> J. Mayor Karp said he had talked to Pres Kelly, Cal -Trans District 4 <br /> Director, regarding the 238/Washington Avenue closure problem. He said <br /> Mr. Kelly apologized and told him Cal -Trans will open 238/Washington <br /> and will be doing some studies, but no conclusions will be reached or <br /> actions taken until after they do their studies. Mayor Karp said this <br /> was the first time Cal -Trans did not inform him about an action; he <br /> said there are new people who didn't realize that closing this route <br /> was a major disaster for San Leandro. <br /> K. Mayor Karp said he would adjourn the meeting in memory of Herman <br /> "Tweety" Alexander. He said Mr. Alexander was a major friend of San <br /> Leandro and reminisced about times when he and Mr. Alexander belonged <br /> to the "No Name" club, a group which got together every year and put <br /> together Christmas baskets for the needy. He said Mr. Alexander was <br /> one of the leaders of this effort. He said Mr. Alexander will be <br /> missed. <br /> 5. NEW BUSINESS <br /> John Jermanis, Finance Director, said he would speak-regarding the items on <br /> the City Council and other agencies' Agendas. He said the actions to be <br /> taken by the four agencies involved a joint project to issue bonds to <br /> provide for financing of the retrofit of the City's essential buildings, <br /> including the North Offices Addition to City Hall and refinancing the <br /> Parking Authority bonds. <br />
