Minutes - San Leandro City Council Meeting - June 7, 1993 Page - 3 -
PUBLIC COMMENTS (continued)
Council Member Perry said she thought Ms. Riskind was referring to
Contra Costa County's plan to withhold the property taxes from the
State. Steve Meyers, City Attorney, said he would report back on this
matter.
D. Larry Smith, 958 Arguello Drive, said he polled the four voters in his
house, and they want to have a special election to fill the position of
Mayor. He said he knows it would cost $30,000 to $40,000. He said he
also knows it will cost $2.7 million to dredge the Marina. He said
people have an interest in having a say. He said the City should
charge the people who have boats for the election, since they are
getting funds from the City to keep their boats at the Marina.
E. Lavern Anderson, 1495 - 159th Avenue, representing the Bonaire Civic
League, Inc. , thanked the four members of the City Council who attended
the picnic. He also noted that there are again large weeds at the
restaurant on the corner of Fairway and Merced.
F. Christine Scobee, 495 Fortuna Drive, said, if the City was not in a
financial problem, she would be asking for a special election because
she believes in democracy. She said she would like to see people
nominate people or people who are interested in the position can come
forward and the City Council can get citizen reaction so they can get
an idea of what the citizens want. She said a lot of people are in
shock and may not have come forward. She said the City Council should
give people a chance to react before a final decision is made.
G. Jeff Houston, 1465 Burkhart Avenue, said the City is in financial
trouble. He said the City Council is supposed to keep the City out of
financial trouble but has not. He said he could not put faith in the
Council 's ability to appoint someone. He said they have done things
like vote for Dunsmuir Ridge, which does not benefit anyone but the
developer; dredge the Marina, which doesn't help anyone; and retrofit
City Hall , and it is questionable if that is necessary. He said they
should have a special election. He said he felt they would probably
appoint John Faria and pick someone out of his District to replace him.
He said, if they do appoint a Mayor, they should change the process for
the Council seat and ask for applications and choose from them.
H. Joseph Collier, 792 Floresta Boulevard, said the last speech was
ridiculous. He said there are many things facing San Leandro at this
time, such as the Redevelopment Project. He said the Marina supports
and benefits many people and is one of the jewels in the City's crown.
He said the City cannot afford a special election, and there are too
many things going on now. He said we need someone in a Council seat
who knows what's going on in San Leandro, and it is important that we
get on with it and get things resolved. He said that is what Dave Karp
would have wanted.
