Minutes - San Leandro City Council Meeting - February 7, 1994 Page - 10 -
PUBLIC HEARINGS (continued)
The Hearing was then opened to the public.
Lou Filipovich, 15376 Laverne Drive, asked if the recycling program
will be serving this location, asked what San Leandro Disposal Company
is, and asked if the recycling program had, received bids. Mayor Faria
noted this was not the subject of this Public Hearing.
Glenn Hilton, 687 Pershing Drive, said he is in favor of the proposal ,
thinks it is a good plan, and this is a good place for it.
Keith Royster, Architect for the Applicant, asked if the City Council
would allow the option of using stucco instead of brick if the cost of
brick is too expensive. Mayor Faria said it appeared the City Council
was interested in approving the Application based upon the Planning
Commission's recommendation, which requires the brick veneer.
Al Rosenga, 534 Parrott Street, said his homeowners' area is adjacent
to this project. He said this is an attempt to let one small brick
building dictate the architecture of the whole area. He said the
proposed building has many beautiful features, and brick is not
necessary. He said brick is likely to fall off in an earthquake. He
said the Development Department should be able to decide what should be
done.
Rick Richards, 335 Peralta Avenue, said this project will be an asset
to the downtown area and will enhance the Root Park and creek project.
He said he would leave the decision of brick or stucco to the Applicant
and staff.
Council Member Nahm said the building's relationship to the park and
the bridge is significant, and it should all be tied together as
proposed by the Planning Commission.
Mr. Royster said they would like the option of using only stucco if
brick is beyond their budget. Mr. Weisbrod pointed out that, after
approval of the project as recommended by the Planning Commission, the
Applicant would be required to go back through the Commission and the
City Council if they wanted to change from brick to stucco.
There being no further comments from the public, on motion of Council
Member Myers, seconded by Council Member Nahm, and carried unanimously,
the Public Hearing was closed.
