Minutes - San Leandro City Council Meeting - May 2, 1994 Page - 11 - <br /> PUBLIC HEARINGS (continued) <br /> Felix Cruz, 454 Dowling Boulevard, said he felt Mrs. Campbell had every <br /> right to paint a mural on her own property and that voting against it <br /> would reflect bigotry, ignorance, and intolerance. <br /> Susan Riskind-Poulsen, 182 Sunnyside Drive, said she believes the <br /> liquor store across from Sabino's is obscene and an area of traffic <br /> problems and they are never handled legally. She said the mural is <br /> artistic and beautiful and should be welcomed. <br /> Andrew Kong Knight, 21095 Gary Drive, said he is a muralist, said he <br /> thinks the mural is beautiful , and he has never heard of problems like <br /> this before. He said the mural is an enhancement, and he described the <br /> benefits of murals. <br /> Mark Behning, 725 Joaquin Avenue, said the mural should remain. He <br /> said the City Council should approve the mural and waive any fine. <br /> Tanika Osmond, 1290 Estudillo Avenue, said she was one of the artists <br /> on the mural . She said other cities have procedures for looking at <br /> art. She said San Leandro needs positive elements, such as parks and <br /> museums, which bring in large business. She said San Leandro should <br /> develop a procedure for public art, and Mrs. Campbell should be allowed <br /> to keep the mural . <br /> Cheryl Morgan, 1871 - 16th Avenue, San Francisco, said she was an <br /> artist on the mural . She said the mural honors women artists and is an <br /> important issue for Women's History Month and the 100th Anniversary of <br /> the San Francisco Women's Gallery. She said none of the figures on the <br /> mural invite prurient interest but celebrate women as people. She said <br /> the mural should be approved and the fees dropped. <br /> Paul Camozzi , said Mrs. Campbell knew what she was doing and broke the <br /> law. He said what the City Council does tonight will have a great <br /> impact on future Planning Commission and City Council decisions. <br /> Steve Crowden, 955 Marina Boulevard, said he is opposed to the mural . <br /> He said he believes the Planning Commission is here to keep standards <br /> high, and the City Council needs to back them in their decision. He <br /> said, if the City Council approves the mural , other people would feel <br /> they could break the zoning laws without consequences. <br /> Jeff Houston, 1465 Burkhart Avenue, said Mrs. Campbell has contributed <br /> unselfishly to our culture and would not have been treated this way if <br /> she had contributed to campaigns. <br /> • <br />
