Minutes - San Leandro City Council Meeting - June 6, 1994 Page - 15 -
PUBLIC HEARINGS (continued)
monitoring of the impact, and said other mitigations could be put
in place if needed. She said other issues were related to the
hours of operation and liquor sales, and Walgreen' s has responded
to those issues.
Flo Walker-Lopez, spoke regarding other drug stores she has
patronized. She said another Walgreen's is not needed in San
Leandro because there is one nearby in San Lorenzo.
Darlene Evans, 359361 Bristol Boulevard, asked specific questions
regarding moving fire hydrants, the storm-drainage system,
emergency vehicles, and hours of operation.
Steven and Judith Seidmeyer, 415 Woodland Park, presented a
letter to the City Council , expressing their concerns regarding
the proposed Walgreen's. They said the proposed business
contradicts the quality objectives San Leandro defined for its
future and will result in a decrease in the value of the area and
an accompanying decrease in long-term revenue opportunities for
the City. They described the impacts they felt traffic, sale of
alcohol , etc. , would have, and suggested possible mitigation
measures.
Francois Gallan, 979 Woodland Avenue, presented photographs of
other Walgreen stores, showing problems related to litter,
debris, graffiti , truck parking, etc. He pointed out the many
problems that currently occur at other Walgreen's and said he was
fearful they would occur at this location as well .
Lou Bozadetski , 271 Begier Avenue, said this proposal is not fair
to the people of San Leandro. He said it will take business from
existing drug stores, which will then move out of San Leandro.
He said Walgreen's low prices may attract low-income people and
more crime, and higher-income people will leave the City.
Mark Rogers, Owner of a Business at 645 East 14th Street,
Representing the San Leandro Chamber of Commerce, said he hopes
the City will be able to alleviate the concerns of the residents
with creative new methods and regulate Walgreen's operations so
they do not impact the surrounding community. He said, if this
can be done, the Chamber supports the project.
Jeff Duke, 871 Woodland Avenue, said Walgreen's may be more of a
problem than an opportunity. He said East 14th Street is not
Montclair or Piedmont Avenue; the level of income is very
different. He said Walgreen's would be the largest store on East
14th Street, would generate more traffic than any other store,
would stay open until midnight, and would sell alcohol . He said
the City should look into this very carefully before anything is
done.
