Presentation of Check from the Optimist Club of San Leandro for T- <br /> Shirts for the Recreation Department, Second Season Baseball Program. <br /> Harold Kitzmann, President Minnie Malloy, and Past President Russ <br /> Mossover of the Optimists Club presented a check for $500 for the <br /> purchase of T-shirts for the Recreation Department's Second Season <br /> Baseball program. He said the thrust of Optimists' activities is to <br /> work with youth of our community, our future leaders. <br /> Mayor Karp noted that the Optimists Club has contributed hundreds of <br /> thousands of dollars to the youth of our community. <br /> Council Members Perry and Kerr, both members of the Club, thanked the <br /> Optimists on behalf of the City. <br /> Council Member Perry noted the Club donated $300 for badges for the <br /> Cherry Festival for Partnership for Youth Safety, as well as cups for <br /> the Kids' Saturday at the Library. She said there is a growing need in <br /> the community for activities for youth. <br /> Council Member Kerr said the Optimists are some of the hardest working <br /> people in San Leandro; you see them everywhere there are youth <br /> activities, contributing money and many hours of their time. <br /> 5. PUBLIC COMMENTS <br /> Rick and Pam Richards, 335 Peralta Avenue, thanked the Mayor and <br /> Council for their support of the Alzheimer Memory Walk, set for October <br /> 3rd, 8:30 a.m. , San Leandro Marina. Mrs. Richards noted that Mr. <br /> Richards has been selected to throw out the opening pitch at the A's <br /> game. Council Member Myers challenged the other Council Members, <br /> Mayor, and City staff to get out and walk. He said he will be walking <br /> and would like to see them walk too. Council Member Perry said she <br /> will be a team leader and at least 10 City employees will be walking. <br /> Council Member Corbett said she and her family will be walking, and one <br /> of her sisters is a group leader. Mr. Richards thanked Ted Swenson for <br /> his support of the Walk and distributed T-shirts, visors, and tickets. <br /> Elliot Katz, President of In Defense of Animals, said the City Council <br /> gave him two weeks to present a proposal and plan to avoid poisoning of <br /> squirrels at the par course. He distributed the proposal and said he <br /> visited the par course with Council Member Kerr, Community Relations <br /> Representative Kathy Ornelas, and others. He said the consensus was <br /> that the squirrels only approach people who offer them food. He said <br /> he spent additional time at the park and explained to people at the <br /> course that they are contributing to the problem. He said many people <br /> said they would be happy to pass out literature and make people aware <br /> of the problem. He showed the City Council a photo of a sign his group <br />
