Minutes - San Leandro City Council Meeting - April 15, 1991 Page - 3 -
PUBLIC COMMENTS (continued?
The City Council asked Mr. Collins additional questions about the makeup
of membership he would recommend.
Claudette Langley, 651 Elsie Avenue, Chairman of the San Leandro Advisory
Committee for Social Justice, said her Committee is geared to responding
to issues in the community related to intolerance. She said she is
concerned about the community's attitude toward people of color. She
said her group is interested in working with the City Council on putting
together workshops, etc. , but the group is feeling frustrated because
they don't get a lot of attention and have had a hard time connecting.
She said her group hoped they could be on the committee but had been told
this was not possible. She said she is concerned that the community may
begin targeting certain groups and polarizing student bodies even
further. She said the proposed committee should be representative of
all groups in the City, that her group can help offer sensitivity, and
that no one should be excluded from the committee.
Roxanne Sanchez, 211 Farrelly Drive, noted that there have been two
parent groups, the Committee for Social Justice and a task force
developed since the October incident, and that none of the committees
have been asked to be on the Youth Safety Committee. She said she does
not believe there is a gang problem in San Leandro. She said, even
though individuals may disagree on what the problems are in the
community, people who have differing viewpoints should get together and
work out their differences. She said other issues should also be
addressed, such as, singling out minorities. She said the proposed
makeup of the committee symbolizes a refusal to work with the community
at large.
Cecelia Thomas, 2777 Marina Boulevard, said she has two children
graduating from San Leandro High School and two still attending. She
said she is concerned that the committee have representatives from all
ethnic groups that attend San Leandro High School . She said she is not
so concerned about gangs but concerned that there be adequate
representation.
B. Esther Holcomb, 694 Douglas Drive, spoke regarding a problem with her
sidewalk last year. She said when she replaced her sidewalk she had to
advance enough money to the City to pay to have the work done and then
hire a private contractor and actually have the work performed before
her money was returned. She said she felt she had to do more work on
her property and adhere more rigidly to the City's specifications than
the City contractor did on other jobs. Specifically, she said the
specifications require removal of dirt to 4" and the addition of crushed
rock and she said she felt that did not happen on the City jobs. She
said she also felt it was essential to get something done immediately
on the youth safety committee.
