IN THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAN LEANDRO
RESOLUTION NO. 99 - 80 (1219/1250)
RESOLUTION REQUESTING THAT CALTRANS INSTALL
ONE CONTINUOUS THROUGH TRAFFIC LANE AND A BIKE LANE
IN EACH DIRECTION SEPARATED BY A STRIPED TWO-WAY LEFT-TURN LANE
ON EAST 14TH STREET, STATE ROUTE#185, BETWEEN DAVIS STREET AND THE
NORTH CITY LIMITS
Recitals
The City has undertaken an extension experiment to determine the effectiveness of
converting East 14th Street between Hays Street and the North City Limits from a four lane street
to a three lane street.
The results of the experiment indicate that the overall safety along the street to all users
has been significantly improved. The East 14th Study Group and the businesses along East 14th
Street in the study area support the one through traffic lane separated by a striped two-way left-
turn lane.
The proposed bike lanes are an integral part of a proposed regional bicycle facility
network in Alameda County. The City of Oakland will be installing bike lanes along
International Boulevard between the City's North City Limits and 52nd Avenue. The bike lanes
will provide a safe place for bicyclists within the street and will discourage the use of sidewalks
by bicyclists. The bike lanes will also provide a clear separation between the through traffic lane
and the on-street parking.
NOW, THEREFORE,the City Council of the City of San Leandro does RESOLVE as
follows:
1. That Caltrans shall be asked to revise the existing East 14th Street geometrics to
reflect one through traffic lane and a bike lane in each direction separated by a
striped two-way left-turn lane.
