RESOLUTION NO. _____ <br />RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF EMERYVILLE DECLARING <br />THE CITY OF EMERYVILLE A WELCOMING CITY <br /> WHEREAS, the City of Emeryville is a welcoming city that is committed to serving and <br />protecting all of its residents, regardless of their immigration status; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the City of Emeryville is a city of peace where all people, regardless of immigration status, are respected, valued and can live in safety and security; and <br />WHEREAS, immigrants are at the foundation of our nation’s success throughout all of its <br />history; and <br /> WHEREAS, the Public Policy Institute of California estimates that as of 2013, more than 2.67 million people of undocumented immigration status called California home – the <br />most of any state in the nation, with an estimated 129,500 of those people living here in <br />Alameda County; and <br /> WHEREAS, one in ten California workers are of undocumented immigration status and are invaluable contributors to the fifth largest economy in the world; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the City Council recognizes and reaffirms that the City of Emeryville is a <br />community that is committed to equality, celebrates diversity, and values the contributions <br />and traditions of all cultures and heritages; and <br />WHEREAS, the Emeryville Police Department is committed to protecting and maintaining <br />a safe and secure environment that enhances the quality of life for everyone in our <br />community, regardless of immigration status; and <br /> WHEREAS, subsequent to the 2016 General Election, members and friends of immigrant <br />communities across the country, including members of the Emeryville community may be <br />experiencing fear or anxiety resulting from potential changes to federal immigration laws <br />and enforcement policies proposed by other elected officials; and <br /> WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Emeryville desires to publicly declare and <br />reinforce the City’s positions relating to immigration status and the protection of the rights <br />of all persons in our community, to help address and alleviate the anxiety and fear <br />produced by the uncertainties associated with the future of federal immigration policies; <br />now, therefore, be it <br />RESOLVED, the City Council of the City of Emeryville hereby declares the following: <br /> <br />1. The City of Emeryville declares itself to be a Welcoming City; and <br /> 2. As a Welcoming City, City employees will serve all residents, and city services will <br />be accessible to all residents regardless of immigration status; and <br />
