83 <br /> <br />Figure 5-12 Earthquake Induced Landslide <br /> <br />5.3.8 TSUNAMIS & SEICHES <br /> <br />The terms tsunami or seiche are described as ocean waves or similar waves usually <br />created by undersea fault movement or by a coastal or submerged landslide. Since <br />tsunamis have high velocities, the damage from a particular level of inundation is far <br />greater than in a normal flood event. <br /> <br />A seiche occurs when resonant wave oscillations form in an enclosed or semi- <br />enclosed body of water such as a lake or bay. Seiches may be triggered by moderate <br />or larger local submarine earthquakes and sometimes by large distant earthquakes. <br />The greatest hazard results from the inflow and outflow of water, where strong <br />currents and forces can erode foundations and sweep away structures and <br />equipment. <br /> <br />122
