PROCLAMATION 2019 <br />PRIDE MONTH & LESBIAN, GAY, BISEXUAL, TRANSGENDER AND <br />QUESTIONING/QUEER (LGBTQ) SENIOR SAFE, VISIBLE AND CELEBRATED MONTH <br />WHEREAS, San Leandro is proudly one of the most diverse communities in <br />California and the founding city of the Lavender Seniors of the East Bay; and <br />WHEREAS, San Leandro’s diversity includes many Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, <br />Transgender and Questioning/Queer (LGBTQ) individuals, couples, seniors, and <br />their children and families; and <br />WHEREAS, many LGBTQ residents and seniors have provided decades of hard <br />work to organize their communities, taking risks and making many sacrifices to <br />pave the way for the civil rights we enjoy today; and <br />WHEREAS, the Lavender Seniors of the East Bay has been at the forefront in <br />providing advocacy and education to promote broader understanding of diversity <br />in the LGBTQ community, and helping to establish greater safety and services for <br />seniors, youth, and other residents; and <br />WHEREAS, the Lavender Seniors of the East Bay has served and cared for LGBTQ <br />seniors since 1994 and now celebrates its quarter century “Silver Anniversary” of <br />service this year; and <br />WHEREAS, the Lavender Seniors have established a policy of collaborating for the <br />betterment and improvement of society by bridging resources to fill unmet <br />needs; and <br />WHEREAS, San Leandro welcomes and celebrates participation in programs at the <br />Senior Community Center by seniors of all races, orientations, gender identities, <br />disabilities, ages, and national origins. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, I Pauline Russo Cutter, Mayor of the City of San Leandro, on <br />behalf of the City Council, do hereby proclaim June, 2019 as “Pride Month” and <br />“LGBTQ Senior Safe, Visible and Celebrated Month”, to honor and recognize the <br />special contributions and challenges faced by LGBTQ residents and seniors <br />throughout the region, and particularly celebrates the Silver Anniversary of the <br />Lavender Seniors of the East Bay for 25 years of public service. <br />9
