Commission; Alameda County Fire, Local 55; Davis Street Family Resource Center and <br />Leadership San Leandro. <br /> <br />Tony B. Santos Park <br />Mayor Emeritus Santos served eight years on City Council from 1984-1988 and again <br />from 1988 until 1992. He returned to Council in 2000 and served until 2006 when he was <br />elected mayor. He served as mayor from 2006-2010. <br />During his tenure, Mayor Emeritus Santos was instrumental in the approval of the Senior <br />Community Center; the construction of the parking garage on Estudillo; and creation of <br />the Kaiser Permanente campus. He was a champion for those living near the Oakland <br />Airport who were struggling with increased noise and helped create the Airport Noise <br />Forum in coordination with the Port of Oakland . He was a tireless advocate for diversity <br />and reform at City Hall recognizing the need to better represent the city’s changing <br />demographics, acknowledging that the Asian and Latinx communities were <br />underrepresented at City Council. <br />On October 21, 2019, the City Council voted unanimously to rename Grover Cleveland <br />Park to Tony B. Santos Park and bestowed on him the title of Mayor Emeritus. <br /> <br />BODIES OF WATER <br /> <br />Jack D. Maltester Channel (San Leandro Marina) <br />In 1992, the channel leading into the San Leandro Marina was named the "Jack D. Maltester <br />Channel". Mr. Maltester’s bio is below. <br /> <br /> <br />STREETS, BRIDGES AND OVERPASSES <br /> <br /> <br />Dan Niemi Way <br />San Leandro Police Officer Nels “Dan” Niemi was a San Leandro Police officer who was shot <br />and killed in an ambush attack. On July 25, 2005 while in the line of duty. The killer, 23-year <br />Irving “Gotti” Ramirez, was apprehended was given the death penalty in 2007.Niemi was born <br />in Guam in 1962 and grew up in the East Bay. He graduated from Sacramento State College <br />with a degree in Arts and Communications. He joined the police force just 3 years before his <br />death, and was survived by his wife and two children. <br /> <br />A portion of Hays Street running close to San Leandro Creek and Root Park was re-named <br />Dan Niemi Way on July 25, 2015. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />Jack D.
