RESOLUTION THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAN LEANDRO <br />RESOLUTION NO.2021-104 <br />RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF SAN LEANDRO CITY COUNCIL TO <br />DECLARE THE SECOND MONDAY OF OCTOBER AS INDIGENOUS PEOPLE'S <br />DAY IN LIEU OF COLUMBUS DAY <br />The City Council of the City of San Leandro does RESOLVE as follows: <br />WHEREAS, Columbus Day is a Federal holiday, established by order of President <br />Roosevelt in 1937, and is officially recognized by some cities and states around the country on the <br />second Monday of October each year; and <br />WHEREAS, Columbus Day does not currently provide an opportunity to reflect on the <br />colonization of North America by Europeans that led to the suppression, forced assimilation, and <br />death of many indigenous peoples; and <br />WHEREAS, prior to colonization, indigenous peoples lived and flourished in the <br />Americas for thousands of years; and <br />WHEREAS, Indigenous People's Day was first proposed in 1977 by a delegation of <br />Native Nations to the United Nations International Conference on Discrimination against <br />Indigenous Populations in the Americas; and <br />WHEREAS, the Governor of California first proclaimed Indigenous Peoples' Day in <br />2019, as a means of celebrating the indigenous peoples who call California home and who have <br />survived and thrived in the face of significant challenges that shaped California's past, present, and <br />future; and <br />WHEREAS, California is home to one of the largest and most diverse populations of <br />Indigenous peoples anywhere in the United States, including tribes located here in the San <br />Francisco Bay Area; and <br />WHEREAS, the City of San Leandro recognizes and values the vast contributions made to <br />the State of California and the United States by indigenous peoples' knowledge, science, <br />philosophy, arts, and culture; and <br />WHEREAS, the City of San Leandro is committed to fostering inclusivity, racial equity, <br />and justice for all people. <br />that: <br />NOW, THEREFORE, the City Council of the City of San Leandro hereby RESOLVES <br />The City of San Leandro supports the official designation of the second Monday each <br />October as "Indigenous Peoples Day" and encourages the public to celebrate this event and <br />promote awareness of indigenous peoples and their rich history and culture. <br />
