Introduction <br />San Leandro 2021 Climate Action Plan Page 9 <br />Equity vs. Equality <br />“Equity and equality are often used interchangeably, but equity and equality do not mean the <br />same thing. Equality is about sameness—meaning that everyone receives the same thing <br />regardless of any other factors. However, equality is only useful if everyone starts from the <br />same place, which is often not the case. Lower-income populations and communities of color <br />often have less access to healthy and energy-efficient housing, transit, or safe bicycling and <br />walking routes. Equity, on the other hand, is about fairness, which is about ensuring that people <br />have access to the same opportunities and have what they need to thrive and succeed. Equity <br />is needed before equality can be reached.
