BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

WHEREAS, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, founded in 1985, is an international
annual health campaign to increase awareness of the disease and raise funds for research into its cause,
prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and cure; and

WHEREAS, breast cancer is the most common cancer among American women. The American
Cancer Society estimates that there will be 281,550 new cases diagnosed in women in 2021 and that it
will claim the lives of 43,600 women this year alone; and

WHEREAS, breast cancer does not discriminate. It strikes people of all races, ages, and income
levels. It is therefore important that awareness of this disease and its symptoms must be increased; and

WHEREAS, research and advocacy have contributed to significant advances in fighting breast
cancer and a decline in death rates; and

WHEREAS, during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we remembe r those taken from
us too soon and pay tribute to the 3.8 million breast cancer survivors living in the United States today ;
and

WHEREAS, breast cancer survivors are a testament to the importance of promoting breast cancer
awareness, providing information, funding research, following recommended screening guidelines and
offering treatment to those that are affected .

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Pauline Russo Cutter, Mayor of the City of San Leandro, do hereby
proclaim the month of October 2021 as "BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH" in San Leandro
and encourage all residents to join in this worthwhile cause to celebrate successes and memorialize lost
battles.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my
hand and caused the Seal of the City of San Leandro
to be affixed this 18th day of October 2021.
