Declaring March as the Annual March for Meals Month in San Leandro <br />WHEREAS, on March 22, 1972, a law was signed into measure that amended the Older Americans Act of <br />1965 and established a national nutrition program for seniors 60 years and older; and <br />WHEREAS, for five decades, this landmark law has helped to fund programs like Meals on Wheels <br />and it is still the only federal program designed specifically to meet the nutritional and social needs of older <br />adults; and <br />WHEREAS, Meals on Wheels America established the “March for Meals” campaign in March 2002 to <br />recognize the historic month and raise awareness about the escalating problem of senior hunger in America; and <br />WHEREAS, Meals on Wheels congregate programs in San Leandro have served our communities <br />admirably; and <br />WHEREAS, Meals on Wheels programs provide nutritious meals to seniors in San Leandro that help <br />them maintain their health and independence; and <br />WHEREAS, Spectrum Community Services, a Meals on Wheels program in San Leandro, deserves <br />recognition for the essential services they have provided amid the COVID-19 pandemic and will continue to <br />provide to our community. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, I Pauline Russo Cutter, Mayor of the City of San Leandro, do hereby proclaim <br />March 2022 as the 20th Annual “March for Meals Month” and urge every resident to take this month to honor our <br />Meals on Wheels programs, the seniors they serve, and the volunteers who care for them. <br />IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand <br />and caused the Seal of the City of San Leandro to be <br />affixed this 21st day of March 2022.
