<br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />Honoring the Late Wilma Chan, Alameda County Supervisor <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Wilma Chan, former Alameda County Supervisor, State Assembly Member, Oakland Board <br />of Education Member, and beloved figure tragically passed away on November 3, 2021; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Supervisor Chan was the first Asian American elected to the Alameda County Board of <br />Supervisors, where she initially served from 1994-2000. She was then elected to the California State Assembly and <br />served from 2000-2006, where she became the first Asian American and woman to serve as Majority Leader. She <br />returned to the Alameda County Board of Supervisors in 2010 where she represented District 3 for the past 11 years; <br />and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, as the chair of the Alameda County Board of Supervisors Health Committee and the <br />Unincorporated Services Committee, Supervisor Chan left a profound impact on District 3, which includes the <br />City of San Leandro; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Supervisor Chan led several key initiatives, including saving San Leandro Hospital, launching <br />the “All In to End Hunger 2020” campaign, and championing Alameda County’s efforts to connect all eligible <br />children to health care coverage; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, in the California State Assembly, Wilma Chan authored several groundbreaking bills, <br />including one that implemented a no-lead standard in drinking water pipes and fixtures, another that made <br />California the first state to ban toxic flame retardants , and historic legislation that ended the practice of <br />hospitals overcharging uninsured and underinsured patients; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Wilma Chan will be remembered for her legacy of trailblazing legislation, dedication to <br />community service, tireless advocacy for children and the voiceless, and her kind spirit. <br /> <br />NOW, THEREFORE, I, Pauline Russo Cutter, Mayor of the City of San Leandro, do hereby <br />recognize the tremendous loss to our community that comes from Wilma Chan’s passing, and honor her for <br />her invaluable contributions to the City of San Leandro and the various communities of Alameda County. <br /> <br /> <br />IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand <br />and caused the Seal of the City of San Leandro to be <br />affixed this 4th day of January 2022. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />17
