ADMINISTRATIVE REVIEW DRAFT
The 2000 Census counted 30,642 households in the City, with 78,625 persons. About 65 percent
(19,817) of the households were families, defined by the Census as "a householder and one or more other
persons living in the same household who are related to the householder by birth, marriage, or adoption."
San Leandro's 10,825 "non -family" households included persons living alone and unrelated individuals
sharing a home, with no children present. The percentage of households that are families is the same as
in Alameda County as a whole.
Chart 3-1 provides additional detail on the types of households in San Leandro. In 2000, about 21 percent
of the City's households consisted of a married couple with children under 18 living at home. While this
figure is low compared to the County as a whole, it represents an increase since 1990, when just 17
percent of the City's households were married with children. The number of "empty nester" households
in San Leandro has declined (from 9,937 to 8,028) as a new generation of young families has moved in.
In 2000, about 6 percent of the City's households (1,828) consisted of single mothers with children under
18. This is about the same percentage as 1990, when there were 1,719 single mother households. There
were 577 households consisting of single fathers with children (1.8 percent), compared to 504 in 1990.
San Leandro's non -family households included 8,745 persons living alone and 2,080 households with
unrelated persons living together. The number of one -person households declined by about 300 between
1990 and 2000, while the total number of non -family households stayed about the same.
Household Size
The 1990s saw a substantial increase in the average number of persons per household in San Leandro. In
1990, the figure was 2.33, which was well below the County average of 2.59. By 2000, the gap had
narrowed, as the City's average was 2.57 while the County's was 2.71. The Department of Finance
estimates that average household size in San Leandro in 2002 is now 2.61.
As Table 3-2 indicates, the recent increase has reversed several decades of decline and is another sign of
the "new wave" of family households in San Leandro. Although San Leandro's households are not as
large as they were in the 1950s and 60s (the figure was 3.28 in 1960), they are much larger than they were
during the late 1970s and 1980s. The recent increase is due to a number of factors, including growing
cultural diversity in the City and larger household sizes in the Asian and Latino communities. Some of
the increase may also be due to a growing number of adult children living at home due to high housing
costs in the area, and to the predominant type of housing (e.g., single family detached) added during the
1990s.
HOUSING ELEMENT 3-3 SAN LEANDRO GENERAL PLAN
4115
