2 Discussion Regarding School Board Member Being Appointed to City Disaster Council
Council Member Loeffler explained that the Disaster Council consists of Council Members, staff
from the City, School Districts, Alameda County Office of Emergency Services, Alameda
County Fire, American Red Cross and Collaborating Agencies Responding to Disaster. The
Disaster Council meets quarterly and experts on disaster preparedness and policies share
information with the Council. The Council started seven years ago and has evolved to the point
where it would be beneficial to have School District Board Member participation. The Liaison
Committee agreed that it would be beneficial to have a School District Board Member sit on the
Council to address policy issues. President Cutter asked that the issue be placed on the School
District's first agenda in August.
3. Update on Burrell Field
Recreation and Human Services Director Knudtson reported that the Burrell Field oversight
committee, which consists of City and District staff, has met twice to discuss the plans for
Burrell Field. One user meeting was also held to obtain input from the community. No major
concerns were brought up although the community had many ideas about possible improvements
to the field. She invited Committee members to attend the next oversight committee scheduled
for July 18`h to provide input on the plans, and the next community meeting scheduled for
August ls` at the Main Library.
4. Committee Member Comments
Council Member Loeffler shared that the City is working on an Information Services Strategic
Plan. He also expressed concern that the School District may be losing teachers due to high
housing costs. President Cutter responded that the District is working with the City and that
Community Development Director Hom agreed to speak with new teachers about available
housing assistance programs.
Council Member Badger reported that he has received calls from school principals and students
expressing their interest in helping with the San Leandro Clean & Green Campaign.
Board Member Pon requested that the Joint Use, Joint Maintenance petition be placed on the
next agenda for discussion. President Cutter shared that she and Mayor Young will be meeting
next week to form a response to the petition.
Board Member Chin suggested expansion of drop-off mitigation to other schools.
5. Public Comments
School District employee Don Bilodeau stated that people should be told the District and City
are currently working together and that there will still be choked traffic on Bancroft Avenue even
with the solutions.
School District employee Billy Campbell stated that the home assistance program should be
offered to all School District employees and that kids picking up litter is not a union issue.
Resident Bob Leigh of the Washington Home Owners Association stated that Burrell Field is an
important site where the joint use concept should be applied and that the San Leandro and San
Lorenzo School Districts should work together to ensure space for all students.
6. Adjourn
The meeting was adjourned at 5:45p.m.
GADEFDAssistant TO CM\Cynthia\High1ights\SLSD7-1 I Am
