CITY OF SAN LEANDRO
STAFF REPORT
DATE: August 27, 2001
TO: John Jermanis, City Manager
FROM: Carolyn KnudtsonWation and
Human Services Director
APPROVED AND
FORWARDED
TO CITY COUNCIL
Mo
aw/-
John . ermanis o l
City ager L2001 /0S! IaCX(
n
BY: Joann Oliver, Recreation and Human Services Manager
SUBJECT PROJECT/PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
M
SUMMARY AND RECOMMENDATION
Eden Information and Referral (Eden I & R) is proposing to implement a new social
service online information and referral service. Eden has requested that the City of San
Leandro contribute $5,000 for this fiscal year and would like a multi -year funding
commitment for the new service. Attached is a letter from the Human Resources
Commission in support of the new service and recommending that the City Council
provide $5,000 for fiscal 2001-02, to be re-evaluated in subsequent years.
• Eden I & R assists Alameda County residents in obtaining information and access to
social services and currently serves as the only comprehensive social service referral
agency serving San Leandro residents.
• The free online service will provide access to over 1200 Alameda County Health and
Human Service resources.
• Those in need of social services may not have access to the Internet. However,
family, friends and care providers who are trying to locate services often have
Internet access.
• The BETA test site will be in operation in the fall of 2001 and fully operational
January 2002.
• Based on the response to date, Eden anticipates support from Alameda County and all
cities within the County. The Alameda County Social Services Agency has
committed $75,000, with another $25,000 commitment once the cities are on board.
The City of Oakland has committed $20,000 with another $20,000 in negotiation; the
City of Berkeley has committed $15,000 and Livermore is in the process of approving
$5,000. Once the cities and counties have made their commitments, Eden will
approach the East Bay Community Foundation and local corporations for the
remaining funds.
A OIZA
