CITY COUNCIL OF SAN LEANDRO
MINUTE ORDER
NO. 98-(None)
SUBJECT: Ballot Measure(s); Matter of Staff Direction
Regarding Ballot Measure(s) for the
June 2, 1998, San Leandro Municipal Election
MEETING DATE: February 2, 1998
The following is an excerpt from the City Council Minutes of February 2, 1998:
NEW BUSINESS
6.D Matter of Staff Direction Regarding Ballot Measure(s) for the June 2, 1998,
San Leandro Municipal Election.
Council discussion ensued regarding whether or not to have the gun tax and
business license ordinances as one or two ballot questions on the June 2,
1998, General Municipal Election ballot. The majority of Council
supported separating the questions on the ballot, and further Council
discussion ensued regarding the issue of postponing the gun tax ordinance
question and not having it on the June 2, 1998, ballot. Those Council
Members supportive of separating the issues noted that it would better
enable the public to choose what they are in favor of.
Council Member Glaze noted that, although he was in favor of separating the
issues, he is supportive of the business license tax and not supportive of
the gun tax ordinance.
Council Member Young agreed that they should be separate issues and stated
that she, too, is supportive of the business license tax, with the
concurrence of the Chamber; but she is not supportive of the gun tax. She
feels the gun tax is punitive.
Council Member Galvan stated he feels there is some logic to postponing the
issue of the gun tax, and he would be in favor of tabling that to the June
2000 election. Council Member Glaze agreed with him.
Mayor Corbett indicated the previous City Council, when the gun tax
ordinance was approved, had voted to place this matter on the June, 1998,
ballot and feels it should be placed before the voters at that time.
Council consensus was to separate the questions and bring any proposed
resolutions regarding ballot question language back to the Council on
February 17, 1998.
