V. Chamber of Commerce Community Calendar (Grycz)
The Chamber of Commerce is working with the City to organize a community calendar.
The City's commitment at this time would amount to $5,000 in cash and any necessary
staff time. This amount is for planning and the City's financial commitment is intended to
reduce substantially thereafter. The City Council Finance Committee voiced concern that
the planning portion of this project not consume an inordinate amount of staff time. The
Finance Committee also suggested that the community calendar information be placed on
the City's Cable Access Channel.
VI. City Council Communications (Grycz/Lee)
Stephanie Lee, Computer Services Manager, reviewed the cost associated with purchasing
computers and printers for the City Council. After reviewing the cost, the City Council
Finance Committee suggested that staff consider alternatives that included: 1) Upgrading
the computers that City Council Members may already have at home and/or 2) Installing a
computer in the City Council Conference Room. The City Council Finance Committee
also asked City staff to consider the long-term financial implications of possibly having to
move the computers after every election. The City Council Finance Committee will
review this issue as part of the proposed budget strategies.
VI[. Animal Control Services - Fairmont Shelter (Grycz/Maginnis)
John Jermanis informed the Finance Committee that the City Council reduced the number
of animal control workers from two to one and that the operation has operated efficiently
with the current staffing levels. Bob Maginnis, Police Chief, also agreed that additional
animal control workers were not necessary at this time. He went on to say that.the City
does not utilize the Alameda County shelter because it is cost proh.UitiVe and there is not
enough space to accommodate the City's needs. The City currently has a contract with
the City of Berkeley Animal Shelter at an annual cost of $40,000.
The City Council Finance Committee discussed the issue surrounding the shortage of
available animal traps for residents in the City. Wandzia Grycz informed the Finance
Committee that she has directed the Public Works Services Department to purchase
additional animal traps for residents.
The City Council Finance Committee was concerned that many residents do not know that
animals picked up by the City's animal control officer are sheltered in the City of Berkeley.
The Police Chief stated that if residents call the Fairmont Animal Shelter they will hear a
recording which informs them to call the Berkeley Animal Shelter for information on
animals picked up in San Leandro. City staff will include a story in the next City
Newsletter regarding animal control services.
