A motion regarding the appointment of Vice Mayor is <br />included on the City Council's May 5, 1997, Agenda. <br />BACKGROUND <br />Section 310 of the City Charter requires that, "At its first regular meeting in May of each <br />year, the Council shall designate one of its members Vice Mayor, to serve for a period of one year <br />and until a successor is elected and qualified. In the absence of the Mayor, the Vice Mayor shall <br />possess and perform the powers and duties of the Mayor." <br />In 1989, the City Council discussed the matter of the designation of Vice Mayor and <br />concurred that "the position of Vice Mayor should not be just one of rotation but was a privilege <br />given to the Vice Mayor and that the new policy would be that the Vice Mayor will be elected by <br />the City Council."
