activities currently going on in San Leandro to address the needs of at risk youth who
might otherwise become engaged in illegal and/or antisocial behavior.
Action 4.9: Develop Ongoing Public Information Program for the Police Department
The San Leandro Police Department needs a mechanism for disseminating information
about its ongoing programs, special outreach efforts, success stories. and other items of
interest to the general public. This information could be included in a regular newspaper
column published in the San Leandro newspaper, as well as in other media outlets that
cover San Leandro. Other activities could include occasional meetings with groups of both
commercial and residential real estate brokers to educate them about crime statistics in San
Leandro and to discuss various crime suppression efforts: making presentations to business
groups. including the Chamber of Commerce, the San Leandro Manufacturers Association.
and local civic groups: and, appearing before the City Council on an occasional basis to
present a status report on public safety issues. Every effort should be made to disseminate
this same information on a regional basis as well, to build a widespread image of San
Leandro as a safe and well -managed community that takes community safety. a pro -active approach to
All such presentations should include some basic information about crime statistics in San
Leandro as a whole. as well as for specific areas such as the Downtown and Bavfair Mall.
These statistics should also be shown in comparison to similar statistics for either other
cities similar in size to San Leandro. as well as for the region as a whole (assuming the
information is available). By presenting crime statistics within a context, people can begin
to understand that San Leandro is not necessarily any worse off than other comparable
communities in the region. and that specific places in San Leandro, like Bavfair Mall, have
successful and well -managed security programs.
Roles and Responsibilities. Police Department and Economic Development
representatives should collaborate on developing mechanisms to disseminate information.
and the Police Department should take priman, responsibility for implementation.
Priority: HIGH
Costs and Sources of Funding. On -going activities of this type should be supported
through the Police Departments existing public outreach functions. Depending on the
scope of this program. the City may wish to consider providing additional General Fund
allocations for these purposes Costs for this program are considered LOW. on an on-
going basis.
68
2 7
