Improving Community Life
The need to improve community life as a means to encourage economic development wasa recurring theme throughout the Baseline Study. A key concern was the need to maintain
and improve the quality of local schools. not only to produce a local work force that is
attractive to businesses. but also to provide quality public education as an attractive
community selling point. A need was identified to enhance downtown San Leandro as a
community shopping center and differentiate its role from that of the City's re=ional
centers as well as to provide upgraded shopping in neighborhoods. The latter is seen as an
important amenity to enhance the City's attraction as a residential location. Another area
of need was to provide greater daytime shopping and restaurant amenities for businesses.
A need was identified for the City to promote a positive community image throughout the
region. For example. the San Leandro Marina is a local asset which can be better used as a
marketing point to both businesses and residents. As part of its overall economic
development efforts. the City should also take steps to address real and perceived public
safety problems in the City to reassure the public that San Leandro is a safe place for
residents and visitors alike. Challenges arising from these conclusions include:
• Promote a positive regional image for the City's residential,
commercial. and industrial areas
• Continue ongoing downtown revitalization efforts
• Encourage the C'
Iry and local businesses to work with local school
districts to improve the qualir and the image of San Leandro's
schools
• Encourage new neighborhood and community retail development to
enhance the quality of life for residents and businesses
• Maximize the value of the marina as a community asset
• Overcome real and perceived problems with community safety
2 11 06 10
