Persons living in retirement or convalescent homes, dormitories or other <br />group living situations are not considered households. Household type and size, income levels, the <br />presence of special needs populations, and other household characteristics determine the type of <br />housing needed by residents, their preferences, and their ability to obtain housing that meets their <br />needs. For example, single-person households tend to reside in apartment units or smaller single- <br />family homes. Households with multiple people, such as families with children, typically need <br />residences with several bedrooms. This section details the various household characteristics in San <br />Leandro. <br />San Leandro had 31,434 households in 2019, a 7 percent increase over 2010. Table 2.9 shows <br />household characteristics data for San Leandro compared to Alameda County. Overall, the <br />composition of San Leandro’s household types was similar to the county as a whole. However, the <br />city had a slightly higher share of single-person and senior households in 2010 and 2019.
