CITY OF SAN LEANDRO
STAFF REPORT
DATE:
TO:
FROM:
SUBJECT:
September 27, 1996
Wandzia Grycz, Interim City Manager
David R. Bohne, Community Services Director
Nanci Klein, Economic Development Coordinator
APPROVED AND
FORWARDED
TO CITY COUNCIL
Wancz
Interim City anager
Joint Community Services Department Holiday Programs and Economic Development
Activities
SUMMARY AND RECOMMENDATION
At City Council request, staff has prepared a Holiday Events and Promotions Program to provide expanded
holiday activities that benefit San Leandro residents, especially San Leandro youth, and local merchants. The
proposed program builds on existing City activities and strives to strike a balance between serving area
neighborhoods and the Downtown. The City's FY1996-97 budget already provides for some holiday
activities in the Community Services Department and Economic Development Division. The additional
holiday costs identified below would be reallocated from the funds identified for provision of the ice -rink.
This report has been prepared for your information only, no action is required.
BACKGROUND
At its September 3, 1996 meeting, City Council directed staff to identify and report back on holiday activities
and promotions that emphasize youth and both benefit the City as a whole and provide support to the
Downtown.
DISCUSSION
The program of holiday events strive to benefit San Leandro's youth and strike a balance between
neighborhood and Downtown activities. The program builds on the strength of the Community Services
Department's existing programs. In addition the program expands support of the Downtown Business
Association's Miracle on East 14th Street event as well as leverages the re -opening of the Pelton-Scribner
Center's renovation, for the benefit of the Downtown overall. An important element of the program is the
coordination of the marketing and promotions of the whole range of San Leandro's holiday activities to both
San Leandro and surrounding area residents, which has not been done before. The program incorporates new
children's activities both in the neighborhoods and in the Downtown. Finally, the plan adds holiday lighting
to East 14th Street between Davis and Dolores Streets for the benefit of all pedestrians and auto drivers that
travel East 14th Street at holiday time.
443
