Individuals from the community will do all of the plantings, except those on Hesperian
and Doolittle, with City staff assistance as necessary. In order to facilitate this effort, the
last element in the proposal provides funds for tree education and community outreach.
The total amount requested is $226,041
IV. Agency Eligibility
The authorizing resolution will follow within thirty days as allowed in the cover letter
that was received from the Resources Agency.
V. Related Transportation Facility
The Caltrans 1-880 Freeway Widening Project is the qualifying existing transportation
facility that would be mitigated by this grant proposal. The 1-880 project was designed to
accommodate increased traffic flow in the form of additional roadway lanes. The 1-880
project entailed removal of existing trees and shrubs within the right-of-way to
accommodate another lane and additional widening at interchanges. This project
effectively removed a significant amount of plant material available to take up carbon
dioxide while providing for increased freeway traffic along 1-880 through the center of
San Leandro. Additional tree planting is needed to offset increased carbon dioxide
emissions. This project will provide for a significant number of trees to be added to the
City`s urban forest, increasing the amount of plant material available to reduce carbon
dioxide emissions generated along the Caltrans 1-880 Widening Project.
The proposed mitigation project is indirectly related to the 1-880 project as the
proposed mitigation will take place throughout San Leandro at various sites. This project
has Caltrans endorsement as noted in the attached form letter.
Page 2
