Nichols
Secretary of Resources
Resources Agency
1416 Ninth Street, Suite 1311
Sacramento, CA 95814
Dear Ms. Nichols:
As Mayor of the City of San Leandro, I would like to express my support for the City of
San Leandro's application for an Environmental Enhancement and Mitigation Program
grant. San Leandro has long recognized the importance of its street, school, park, and
neighborhood trees. San Leandrans appreciate the importance of trees and their
contribution toward a cleaner and healthier environment.
The widening of Interstate Highway 880 through San Leandro and the addition of sound
walls along the freeway required the removal of mature vegetation. Although new
landscaping has been installed, the additional trees that would be planted if we receive a
favorable reply to our grant request would help mitigate the detrimental effects of this
heavily traveled freeway.
In San Leandro Interstate 880 makes direct connections with State Freeway 238, State
Highway 185, and State Highway 61, and indirect connections with Interstate 580.
Because of these connections, the changes along Interstate 880 have affected all of the
City of San Leandro. A proposal such as San Leandro's Urban Forestry Project that
would plant trees over the entire City would address these City-wide effects.
Thank you for your consideration of this important matter.
Si
Ma
EXHIBIT N
Page 37
