Each participant receives a hand stamp to indicated that he/she has <br />been properly registered. <br />The registration booth will feature banners identifying the City of San <br />Leandro Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Program. <br />2. Bicvcle & Helmet Inspection <br />Each bicyclist who brings his/her own bike to the rodeo will have it inspected <br />by the bike mechanic. !Minor repairs will be made such as the inflation of <br />tires and tightening of handlebars and seats. Only approved bicycles will be <br />allowed on the course. <br />If a bicycle does not pass inspection, a checklist will be provided to the parent <br />indicating the problems. If the bike is a hazard to the safety of the child, the <br />child will not be allowed to ride the bike on the course. A Safe Moves bike <br />will be provided for the child to use on the course. <br />Each bicyclist who has his/her own helmet must pass through the helmet <br />inspection line. A rodeo staff member inspects the helmet for proper fit and <br />certification. Each helmet is inspected for wear and tear. Recommendations <br />are made to parents if the helmet needs to be replaced. Each parent is taught <br />how to properly fit a helmet onto their child's head. The importance of <br />proper fit is stressed. <br />If a child does not have a helmet or did not bring his/her helmet to the rodeo, <br />he/she will be provided with a helmet to used on the rodeo course. (Note: <br />Safe Moves promotes the necessity of each bicyclist bringing his/her own <br />helmet on the flyer and all related promotional material.) <br />I Rodeo Course <br />The rodeo course is designed for bicyclists and pedestrians. Children will be <br />taught bicycle handling, traffic hazard assessment skills and avoidance of the <br />leading causes of bicycle and pedestrian collisions. Those bicyclists able to <br />ride on the street will be taught how to make turns from the street, use the <br />bike lane and how to share the road with vehicles. Lessons will include the <br />following: <br />Bicycle Handling Skills <br />• Proper braking techniques for various situations <br />( steep hill, wet pavement, sand or debris) <br />• Proper mounting and dismounting techniques <br />Page 4 of 8 <br />
