1992 to present <br />The City received a $5,000 state grant to purchase Chinese language <br />materials for the Library, which was the beginning of the Library's Chinese <br />Language Collection. <br />1992 <br />The Police and Recreation Departments collaborated on a City-wide gang <br />awareness and prevention program in conjunction with the schools. A <br />public forum, parent workshops, campus support groups, and direct <br />intervention to professional counselors were offered. Over 250 people <br />attended a Gang Awareness Forum at the Main Library. <br />1992 <br />The Mayor's Office collaborated with the Models of Unity Project for a <br />Race Unity Month and a Race Unity Picnic at Marina Park. <br />1992 <br />The City offered the community a Cultural Diversity Program with <br />workshops and group discussions on cultural diversity, prejudice and <br />intolerance. The program included "Train the Trainer" where City staff <br />became the community meeting facilitators. <br />1992 <br />The Police and Recreation Departments sponsored a County -wide Hate <br />Crime Prevention Workshop at the Main Library. <br />1993 to present <br />The City began incorporating Advent, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa traditions <br />into the annual Holiday Tree Lighting event. <br />1993 to present <br />The City received a $5,000 state grant to purchase Spanish language <br />materials for the Library, which was the beginning of the Library's Spanish <br />Language Collection. <br />1994 <br />A team of City staff was created as the Cultural Diversity Task Force, and <br />the City offered the community a second series of Cultural Diversity <br />workshops (Study Circles) on cultural diversity, racism and race relations, <br />with City staff once again facilitating the discussions. <br />1994 <br />Library staff attended State Library Celebrating Diversity training. <br />January 1995 to <br />The Library, followed by the Recreation and Human Services Department, <br />present <br />began hosting an annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day program for the <br />community to honor Dr. King and his life's accomplishments. <br />February 1995 to <br />The Library began an annual Black History Month program. <br />resent <br />May 1995 to <br />The Library, followed by the Recreation and Human Services Department, <br />resent <br />began hosting Cinco de Mao celebrations at the Civic Center Plaza. <br />February 1995 to <br />The Library began offering an annual Lunar New Year Program. <br />resent <br />March 1995 to <br />The Library began celebrantion of National Women's History Month. <br />resent <br />1995 <br />The City produced a "San Leandro Celebrates Diversity" pamphlet <br />describing the City's commitment to celebrate diversity in programs and <br />services. <br />1996 to present <br />The Diversity Resource Directory was created to provide listings of local <br />agencies, non-profit organizations, and government agencies that provide <br />services to the community. <br />Currently: The Directory has been reprinted in 1999 and 2003, <br />adding churches and schools. Staff is getting quotes now to do a <br />2007 update. <br />
