Gen Lead
Belong Lab
Activity: B.R.AN.I.N.G.
Directions:
Part I
You watched Brene Brown speaking on "The Anatomy of Trust."
Why the focus on trust? Because you not only are tasked with establishing trust with one another but
also, as members of the leadership team, with the rest of the staff at City of San Leandro, and with the
public. Trust also serves as the foundational requirement for teams to be effective.
Part II
In her talk, Brene Brown describes the factors that create trust using the acronym "B.R.A.V.I.N.G."
Each of you was assigned one of the factors as listed below:
B — Mayor Pauline Russo Cutter
R — Vice Mayor Corina Lopez
A — Council Member Deborah Cox
V — Council Member Ed Hernandez
I — Council Member Victor Aguilar, Jr.
N— Council Member Benny Lee
G — Council Member Pete Ballew
Each person gets 2 minutes (I'll nudge you when you need to wrap up) to describe one example (a
true story from your own experience) of the factor being applied well or when it could have been
applied better. Your example can come from your personal life or your professional life. Please be
sensitive, supportive, respectful, constructive, and (of course) trustworthy if you choose to provide an
example from your current team.
Everyone take your big poster sheet and pass it to the person sitting next to you. This is the factor you
are going to be the notetaker on. In the top part of this poster paper, we are going to record actionable
tips for how to fulfill this factor well in the top section.
Part III
After we have gone around the table, we will then fill out the bottom part of the poster papers with:
1. One of the factors you believe you handle particularly well and a tip for others on how they
also can handle that factor well.
2. One of the factors you would like to work on.
3. Choosing from all of the factors, let's vote on which two of these factors are the ones you see
as areas for greatest improvement for this team as a whole.
4. Let's brainstorm together (and by brainstorm, I mean there is no bad idea) what are some
actionable ways you as a team can get better at this.
© Neha Sampat, GenLead 2019
