RESOLUTION THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAN LEANDRO <br /> <br />RESOLUTION NO. 2022- <br /> <br />RESOLUTION HONORING COUNCIL MEMBER VICTOR AGUILAR, JR. AND <br />PUBLICLY ACKNOWLEDGING HIS ROLE AS THE FIRST OPENLY GAY LATINX CITY <br />COUNCIL MEMBER IN THE CITY OF SAN LEANDRO <br /> <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Council Member Victor Aguilar, Jr. was first elected to the San Leandro City Council <br />as part of the November 2018 election and commenced his public service as a member of the City <br />Council in January 2019; and, <br /> <br />WHEREAS upon taking office, Council Member Aguilar distinguished himself by becoming the first <br />openly Gay Latinx member of the City Council in San Leandro’s history; and, <br /> <br />WHEREAS, both the State of California and the City of San Leandro embrace and celebrate their <br />diverse ethnic and cultural heritages, including the largest ethnic group in the state – 15.6 million <br />Latinx, whose roots stretch throughout North, Central, and South America, along with the many <br />residents who trace their ancestors to the original Indigenous communities of Latin America, and <br />Africa; and, <br /> <br />WHEREAS, throughout California’s history, both its Latinx and its LGBT communities have faced <br />many inequalities and injustices, while helping to shape the state’s social, political, and economic <br />landscapes, and that legacy continues today; and, <br /> <br />WHEREAS, an estimated 643,000 California adults self-identify as Latinx and LGBT. Among all <br />California Latinx adults, 6.1% identify as LGBT; and, <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Latinx heritage is deeply rooted in California’s culture and history, with nearly four in <br />ten Californians identifying as Latinx; and, <br /> <br />WHEREAS, diversity is a key element of California’s strength and its Latinx and LGBT <br />communities contribute to this strength every day; and, <br /> <br />WHEREAS, by acknowledging Council Member Aguilar as the first openly Gay Latinx member of <br />the City Council, the City seeks to further honor and celebrate the contributions of all Latinx <br />leaders in our history and those who serve our community; and, <br /> <br />NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that I, Pauline Russo Cutter, Mayor of the City of San <br />Leandro, on behalf of the entire City Council, hereby recognize and honor Council Member Victor <br />Aguilar, Jr. The City of San Leandro further invites all members of the San Leandro community to <br />utilize this recognition as an opportunity to reflect on the rich culture, history, and contributions of <br />Latinx and LGBT people towards the enrichment of the American experience. <br /> <br />Passed and adopted this 19th day of September 2022, by the following vote: <br /> <br />Members of the Council: <br /> <br />AYES: () <br /> <br />NOES: () <br /> <br />ABSENT: () <br /> <br />ATTEST: <br />Kelly B.
