City of San Leandro <br />City Council <br />Meeting Date: November 7, 2022 <br />Agenda Number: 3.c. <br />Agenda Section: RECOGNITIONS <br />File Number: 22-187 <br />File Type: Presentation <br />Proclaiming November 13-19th as Transgender Awareness Week and November 20, 2022 as <br />Transgender Day of Remembrance in San Leandro <br />Honoring Transgender Awareness Week and Transgender Day of Remembrance <br />WHEREAS, all people deserve to live in a community that respects their dignity, safety, and overall <br />well-being; and <br />WHEREAS, transgender people from all walks of life continue to face high levels of discrimination, <br />fear, and stigma; and <br />WHEREAS, each year between November 14th - 20th, Transgender Awareness Week raises the <br />visibility of transgender people and to address the issues they face; and <br />WHEREAS, the week concludes with Transgender Day of Remembrance on November 20th, which <br />brings awareness to hate crimes committed against transgender people and honors the memory of those <br />harmed and killed by senseless acts of violence; and <br />WHEREAS, according to available federal data sources, there are approximately one million people in <br />the United States who identify as transgender, representing 0.6% of the adult population. The San Francisco <br />Bay Area has one of the highest percentages of adults who identify under the LGBTQA+ umbrella; and <br />WHEREAS, the City of San Leandro benefits from the diversity of its population and seeks to promote <br />inclusion of all people as a testament to our shared values of dignity, equity, and fair treatment, without <br />regard to gender identity or expression. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, I, Pauline Russo Cutter, Mayor of the City of San Leandro, do hereby proclaim <br />the week of November 14th-20th as "Transgender Awareness Week" and November 20th as <br />“Transgender Day of Remembrance” in San Leandro and encourage all residents to join in this <br />worthwhile cause to promote inclusion, equity, and understanding of transgender people in our community. <br />IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand <br />and caused the Seal of the City of San Leandro to be <br />affixed this 7th day of November 2022. <br />Page 1 City of San Leandro Printed on 11/2/2022
