City of San Leandro <br />City Council <br />Meeting Date: February 6, 2023 <br />Agenda Number: 3.e. <br />Agenda Section: RECOGNITIONS <br />File Number: 23-032 <br />File Type: Presentation <br />Black History Month <br /> <br />WHEREAS, African Americans have made significant contributions to the artistic, economic, educational, <br />political, literary, religious, scientific, and technological advancements of the United States; and <br />WHEREAS, the observance of Black History Month calls our attention to the continued need for community <br />action to end racism, extend mercy, and develop equity for everyone; and <br />WHEREAS, we honor the men and women of African American descent, including past generations who <br />advocated for the ending of slavery and the enactment of civil rights laws, to educators who answered a free people’s <br />call for a free mind, and to ongoing efforts to press towards a brighter and more equitable future; and <br />WHEREAS, the City of San Leandro continues to work toward becoming an ever-more inclusive community <br />in which all residents are respected and recognized for their contributions to our community, our state, our country, and <br />the world regardless of the color of their skin. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, I, Juan Gonzalez, III, Mayor of the City of San Leandro, do hereby proclaim <br />February 2023, as “Black History Month” in the City of San Leandro, and encourage the public to join us in <br />commemorating this important occasion in recognition of the numerous contributions made by Black and African <br />American communities locally, nationally, and globally. <br />IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and <br />caused the Seal of the City of San Leandro to be affixed this <br />sixth day of February 2023. <br />Page 1 City of San Leandro Printed on 2/2/2023
