2019 State of the City Mayor’s Address INTRODUCTION Good evening everyone. On behalf of the City of San Leandro, I would like to welcome you all to the 2019 State of the City. It is truly my pleasure to serve as the Mayor of a city that values all its people and has woven kindness into our daily lives. Thank you to our community for trusting my leadership for these next 4 years, because it’s all of us working together that makes San Leandro the special city it is, where people want to live, work and play. It’s an exciting time for us here and I would like to share the progress we are making on key projects and initiatives, and to update you on some of our challenges, and share our plans and ideas for the future. I know that when I am talking to neighbors, knocking on doors, and even in the aisles of the grocery store, there are 3 main topics that people want to talk about: ● Getting more restaurants, ● Fixing the roads, ● And issues around housing. We have heard you loud and clear, and in the last few years, many new restaurants opened in San Leandro. The good news is that more and more restaurants are coming. Just this past year, we’ve seen the addition of: ● Korean, ● Soul food, ● Chinese, ● Sushi, ● Bakeries, ● And coffee shops. We also saw a record number of other new businesses coming to our city this year. We know that a thriving local economy translates to a better quality of life for our residents. Tonight, you will find the word sustainability woven throughout my speech. When we hear this word, most people automatically think about the environment. While environmental sustainability is an important goal, sustainability, as a concept, can also be applied to so many other aspects of City government, such as: · our infrastructure, · access to housing for everyone, · city finances, AND · our efforts to be innovative, all of which you will hear more about as I continue...
