RESOLUTION THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAN LEANDRO
RESOLUTION NO.2022-154
RESOLUTION HONORING COUNCIL MEMBER CORINA LOPEZ AND
PUBLICLY ACKNOWLEDGING HER ROLE AS THE FIRST LATINX CITY
COUNCIL MEMBER IN THE CITY OF SAN LEANDRO
WHEREAS, Council Member Corina Lopez was first elected to the San Leandro City
Council as part of the November 2014 election and commenced her public service as a member of
the City Council in January 2015; and
WHEREAS upon taking office, Council Member Lopez distinguished herself by becoming
the first Latinx member of the City Council in San Leandro's history; and
WHEREAS, both the State of California and the City of San Leandro embrace and celebrate
their diverse ethnic and cultural heritages, including the largest ethnic group in the state — 15.6
million Latinx, whose roots stretch throughout North, Central, and South America, along with the
many residents who trace their ancestors to the original Indigenous communities of Latin America
and Africa; and
WHEREAS, throughout California's history, its Latinx communities have faced many
inequalities and injustices, while helping to shape the state's social, political, and economic
landscapes, and that legacy continues today; and
WHEREAS, Latinx heritage is deeply rooted in California's culture and history, with nearly
four in ten Californians identifying as Latinx; and
WHEREAS, diversity is a key element of California's strength and Latinx communities
contribute to this strength every day; and
WHEREAS, by acknowledging Council Member Lopez as the first Latinx member of the
City Council, the City seeks to further honor and celebrate the contributions of all Latinx leaders in
our history and those who serve our community; and,
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that I, Pauline Russo Cutter, Mayor of the City
of San Leandro, on behalf of the entire City Council, hereby recognize and honor Council Member
Corina Lopez. The City of San Leandro further invites all members of the San Leandro community
to utilize this recognition as an opportunity to reflect on the rich culture, history, and contributions
of Latinx peoples towards the enrichment of the American experience.
